Ever have a week that ended before you realized it began? This week was a blur. A good friend came to town and we spent the week together: hung out with kids, had a few drinks, told a few jokes, and tried to do some business. So while my Amex didn’t forget what I did, I sure did. When you are around something new, novel, and getting the chance to catch up with old mates, time flies.
During this meaningful powwow, some very successful people were trapped in a sunken submarines while visiting the Titanic. I’m not to make light of the tragedy (you can visit Twitter if you want tasteless jokes), I’m a believer in that post-analysis is no analysis unless there is honesty of the reviewing the situation and what factors occurred real-time.
While the information is becoming more readily available there are two items I thought are relevant to review.
James Cameron who is in recent interviews is not doing any analysis but giving the impression that he is, after the fact. We know James from his great movie related to the Titanic and his underwater research with his sub and technology he developed. He’s taking a tragedy and to add more credibility to his accomplishments. At least, when Musk was “trying” to help kids stuck in a cave he did it in real time.
The submarine was operated by a video game controller. This implies that the entire operation was run by 20 year old gamers. Come on. There is an entire segment of the army that is using similar game controllers to wage war.
For some reason, humans think things at the end of the day are complicated but they really are not. Accidents happen, but also great results from keeping things simple.
I argue that investing in the markets is more simple than people realize and you don’t need a complicated submarine and you don’t even need a game controller, but a phone to place your order and a 52 week high, low list.
Maybe that’s too simple. But it’s better than most strategies. And many times, when you see a famous investor get a pie in his face it appears to be over something silly, yet for that 1 pie in the face he has enjoyed a life of cake and pastries.
